How to make Chinese characters on a HongKong-bought Dell laptop be converted to English?
Hi guys! My in-laws are from here in Manila as well but when they visited HongKong, a family member gave us their "used" Dell notebook. It's a DELL INSPIRON - with Chinese characters! How do I go about converting it to English? Thanks!

Id say Beijing, China. Thailands laptops arent very reliable. Everythings made in china anywayy my dads bought a few cheapies out in Beijing and their great!
2 :
Definitely not Thailand, although prices have come down recently (like everywhere else) computers are expensive in Thailand due to high import tariffs. Singapore and Hong Kong are both duty free ports and have better prices and better selection. Check out Wanchai Computer City or the Mongkok Computer Centre in HK or Sim Lim Square in Singapore.
3 :
I've seen Acer laptops for sale at Tesco Lotus stores for 13,000 baht-368.723 USD

Is a flexidrive (6xSDcard slot) as good as an SSD drive?
I came across something odd called a Sharkoon SSD Flexi-drive, wich apparently is a flexible way of making an SSD drive, letting you use SD(HD) cards in raid behind a SATA controller, making it seem like the ultimate cheapskate way to make your laptop/netbook shakeproof. ;) Like this: http://www.databyte.nl/foto.asp?img=\productinformatie\illustraties\Harddisken\sharkoon_flexi-drive_s2s_4.jpg Has anyone got a clue at how reliable this stuff is? Is it fast? Will it last me more then a week when I bully it with for instance games and movies? It doesnt seem very feasible to me, but im checking it with you guys before taking the bait and buying a sack fo cheap 8GB SSD cards from hongkong. :P

DVD's won't play, WMA says a problem with outdated Drivers but thats not the problem?
I just got an old laptop (Dell Latitude D600) and with one DVD it ran fine but there was no sound. With another it wouldn't run because Windows media player said that there was a copy protection problem between the DVD player a graphics driver. It suggests upgrading the graphics card drivers Radean mobility 9000, but it has the latest drivers. Windows media player is the latest version (11) and I have tried on Winamp as well (latest version) to no avail. The DVD is from HongKong (I live in Australia) but it was bought from HMV so its a legitimate copy

Battery life for Macbook Pro
Battery life for Macbook Pro.?
I bought a Macbook pro at the beginning of this month in Hongkong. The Apple company claimed the battery life is as long as 10 hours, but I didn't charge the battery completely at the first time due to some emergency. Then every time I use the laptop, I keep it plug in. Will the battery life be shorten because of the incomplete charge at the first time?

Only slightly. The Battery will "repair" itself eventually if you only do long, deep charges like Apple (or any other laptop maker) would suggest. To increase battery life do not use the included Safari browser. Use Chrome or Firefox with Ad-block instead - this can make a pretty big difference

Vista too slow
Vista too slow?
Bought a new laptop Compaq B1900 in Hongkong with intel duo core processor 1.7 mghz and 512 MB ram and ATI radeon graphics Why does Vista run slow on the laptop How can i increase its speed
Laptops & Notebooks - 7 Answers

1 :
Vista runs slowly because you don't have a lot of RAM.
2 :
truly, thats not enough memory to run Vista, its a BEAST, no joke, 1gig of memory is the least i'd use with vista.
3 :
Add more RAM. Vista Basic requires 512mb RAM. This is pretty much eating up all your RAM. If you have Vista Premium or Ultimate, it requires 1gb RAM. I would boost up your RAM to 2gb either way.
4 :
Vista is a memory hog. You need more RAM. Also, it allocates more memory from video than any OS to date. If your system has anything less than 256-512mb video memory, the OS will be taking even more system memory to make up for the loss. All in all, get AT LEAST, another 512MB ram, and you'll be much happier. Or even better, downgrade to XP until they get all the kinks in vista worked out with Sevice Pack 1 in december. Sorry to break the bad news.
5 :
I have a similar model and i added 2 Gigs of ram which should run you about 150 on Ebay. No my machine is super fast. Adding the ram is very easy and take about 5 min and a small screw driver
6 :
You don't have enough memory. You should have at least 1GB and 2GB would be even better. That's Microsoft coding for you. Or you could just run Ubuntu. It'll run fine with your specs. Ubuntu anyone? http://www.ubuntu.com
7 :
xp is your only option. vista is not slow.. it can't be its not hardware. its a software. the software vista requires a fast set of hardware setups to run. basic rules are Ram. you need to have 1gig if basic and 2gig if anything else.. 3 if ultimate. (you can purchase up to 2 for yours) 128mb of dedicated Video. (which you dont have) and a fast processor. your processor doesnt make any sence to me. Dual Core 1.7??? but anyway that will work with XP better

how can I find out if a company in china called eurbra is legit?
im looking to see if a company in china is lagit since it is selling laptops at a quarter the price, the website is eurbra. i have checked its location and it exists in hongkong but im still unsure, but for a qquarterthe price it may be a opportunity i cant miss thanks

And if that laptop is dead on arrival, or if the disk drive dies in 3 months, or the OS is the Chinese version, who is going to fix it? Are you going to send it back to China? You pay a little more, but you get support and piece of mind. When you buy things, don't just think "price", unless it is something disposable, because you get what you pay for!!
2 :
Try to find a database and look up the company, check their reputation, and if it's good buy the laptop.
3 :
Ask a nearby China consulate

buying a laptop on ebay from hong kong?
So I am on ebay and there is this seller that is selling 7 inch netbooks all the way from hongkong. bids start at 50 bucks. problem is that he is selling out of hong kong and wants a phone number when u order so he can make sure u get the package on time. What do u think? Should I go for the bid or forget it? I dont know if i should trust a package comming from outside the us. how do I know I will get the package? He has 98 percent of postive feedback. What do u think?

Well on ebay you're protected, if you use paypal. when you win the item he will need to provide tracking number on auction listing or send you an email of the tracking number. Receiving items from outside the united states is safe as long as its actually coming. The only reason you wouldn't get item is because there was complications in customs. I buy from chinese manufactures all the time. It usually takes about a week to arrive. Make sure you use paypal though. If any case where he didn't send item u can dispute on ebay to get your money back.
2 :
I've bought many things that come from HK. There are quality business thriving out of the city. I primarily go on the quality of the feedback. Does he have a lot of sales and does he have positive feedback. You answered yes to one of these.
3 :
If you bid just remember there may be customs fees. If he has good feedback and you pay with Pay Pal you should have no problems. I would not give my phone number the eBay mail system should be all he needs. I have seen those same netbooks from American sellers for about $125

Is there internet on the airplane?
I'm going to fly about 18-20 hrs, and I'm bringing my laptop too. I'm not sure that I will be able to connect to the internet. My airplane is Cathay (Hongkong). Is there anyone know????

Not that I'm aware of. Last time I flew internet wasn't available. Having said that, read on: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,141545,00.html
2 :
Yup!!! You just have to ask an attendant for them to hook you up with the internet.....I'm pretty sure.....but you might have to be first class...Have a good day, hope I helped! :)
3 :
The FCC made it OK a few years ago, but few airlines are jumping on the bandwagon. Check Cathay's site to see. Add: OK, I checked. They don't.
4 :
Check with your airline cathay pacific. If they have the skyphone, you may be able to dial-up!
5 :
yes. but i think you have to pay extra... unless you plan on going first or business class..
6 :
If they don't have high speed access you can more then likely use the phone in the back of the seat in front of you if you have a 56k modem in your laptop...
7 :
No, you can't use the internet while aboard a plane. A internet connection either requires a plug in to a phone jack or WiFi, which is wireless internet. WiFi can be applied to specific areas, such as a coffee shop or office. However, it cannot be applied to an airplane because it is constantly moving. However, most airports have WiFi so you can always use it then.
8 :
There might be on the more expensive airlines, such as the one that goes from London. But most flights have the option, to watch a video- well almost most.
9 :
Contact Cathay Pacific. http://www.cathaypacific.com http://www.cathaypacific.com/cpa/en_INTL/contactus/worldwidecontacts
10 :
NO, you would have to have a connection more than likely by satellite. A plane traveling 500 to 600 miles per hour would never be able to maintain a connection. I have been on cruise ships that try to maintain connection at 25 miles per hour, and they cannot keep a good connection. You best put some video games on the PC and some music files and bring your headphones. If you have some layorer or plane connection points you may be able to get a wifi connection in the airport.
11 :
i don't know
12 :
Boeing introduced the "Connexion by Boeing" (CBB) in 2000 to offer airlines internet installation on board the plane. Several airlines already have inflight internet service available thanks to CBB, they are: Lufthansa, ANA, JAL, SAS, China Airlines, Singapore Airlines, ASIANA Airlines, Korean Air, El Al, ETIHAD Airways. Cathay Pacific is not one of the launch carrier in this service, so no internet service on Cathay flight. However, due to heavy loss from the launch 6 years ago, Boeing recently is considering whether to sell or shut down CBB

Are electronic gadgets cheaper in Hong Kong
Are electronic gadgets cheaper in Hong Kong?
We're having a trip to HongKong this week. I wonder if electronic gadgets such as mobile phones and laptops are cheaper there (compared to Philippines). And I would also like to know what other stuff can be bought there at a low price.
China - 6 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Hong Kong is one of the cheaper places to buy electronic gadgets. This is because Hong Kong is a free port and there are no taxes on imports, plus being next to China many items are at close to Chinese price. However people from the US will generally be dissapointed in the prices as the US has very low prices on electronic gadgets. In addition some items, like Sony products, use standard international pricing which means their products are the same high price everywhere. You also have the issue of warranties, with some products requiring an additional fee to have an international warranty, which other products may require that you pay for the repairs and send off for reimbursement.
2 :
I compared the price difference on cameras the last time I was preparing to go to Hong Kong from the UK. There seemed very little difference between the prices in Hong Kong and the UK. I bought my camera in the UK because of the warranty issue. Take a look online to compare prices. Also beware of fakes in HK and only use registered dealers if you decide to buy.
3 :
No. The prices are the same. The choice is wider.
4 :
Hong Kong is known to have a wide array of choices for electronic gadgets from laptops, TV's, camera, mobile phones, etc etc. Most items are cheaper, not by so much though. One thing Hong Kong prides on is they discourage fake products (you will see http://www.nofakes.hk/ posters and signs everywhere in MTR stations) so what you are getting is the real value of true product at a reasonable price. For mobile phones, there are many stores offering re-conditioned phones, basically they offer refurbished phones at a low price, the quality is not so bad, I had bought a 5310 Nokia in Mongkok and still works fine, no visible scratches or any damage. Other countries like Singapore, they offer a big tech sale almost each year, opening up newest products on the market, while the price might not be considered a big sale, the freebies of casing, lens protectors, bags, memory cards and other stuff makes up for it.
5 :
I presume it can be cheaper then the Philippines. Why don't you just compare some prices for some items you target? This website is in Chinese, but with the picture should be easy to operate: http://www.price.com.hk PS: study also about potential import taxes in PH.
6 :
as we r taxfree........some items can be cheaper than Phil i guess. anyway, many tricky appliances shops out there........beware!! especially in Tsim Sha Tsui area as it's the main tourist's area. u sh goto those hugh chain store....such as Fortress Store here in HK as they dun cheat

Go to the HP website...you can get them from there. Or you can call around to different electronics stores.

Will you have to pay customs if you carry on two (2) laptops on an international flight
Will you have to pay customs if you carry on two (2) laptops on an international flight?
I will be traveling this week from the US to the Philippines and transit Hongkong. Do you think customs will charge me for bringing two laptops? They are both used and are open in their boxes. Thank you for your time for sharing your experience and knowledge. If you can add a proper source that would be great!

you pay customs on things you Buy in other Countries and bring back into the usa not what you Bring in from your home- depends on what it is and the value-there is usually a certain value you can import for free https://help.cbp.gov/
2 :
It depends on whether you declare them for personal use or as a gift. Most likely you won't even be asked about them. Some countries may ask you to fill out a form saying they are for personal use and you better have them when you leave the country or you will be required to pay duty on them. You won't have a problem in Hong Kong if you stay within the transit area and do not clear customs. I travel frequently with two laptops and have never had a problem, nor have I been questioned about them. If they do ask you in the Philippines, tell them they are for personal use. If they ask you to fill out a form, you better have it with you when you leave or be prepared to pay duty

Well, I think I could definitely answer this questions. Cause I am a Chinese student in Beijing, I used to take my SAT exam and AP for 5 times traveling HK. I bought 2 cellphones and 1 laptop there. According to your list, 1, it is safe to shop with the big shops there. However, DO NOT take a chance to bought a cheaper one in the local small shops, no matter what they told you, not matter how reasonable that they explain their price is cheaper. They are liars all the time!! 2,There are some large and best-review stores that I recommend to you One named "Broadway" I write down the Chinese name for you:百è€æ±‡. Probably you could copy that and show that to the HKness there. There are also a famous store named "Fortress" the chinese is :丰泽 it pronounces"Feng ze". Another one I wanted to tell you is "citicall", the chinese is: é•å°„ it pronounces"Lei she". 3, So the price all depends on what you want I've seach the official websites of those three stores: Boardway http://www.ibroadway.com.hk/ there's catalog online, as you could search for the right price http://www.fortress.com.hk/tc/home.html http://www.citicall.com.hk/index.asp And I personally perfer the "Boardway" where I got my laptop. So, anyway, good luck and have a nice trip in HK

I want to know current price at duty free shop at hongkong airport, how to find it?
as i would like to compare the price of products like camera, watches, and phones, laptops, etc, with USmarket, and Mumbai market rates.

Try this link http://www.hongkongairport.com/eng/skymart_v2/index.htm But I don't think you will be able to access the prices.....
2 :
Prices at the HK airport are quite high. They will be much lower in the city. Sounds like you have a stopover in HK on the trip to the USA, right? If so, then buy in the USA, it will be most likely much cheaper then in HK. You can find local HK prices for some technical stuff here: http://www.price.com.hk Note also that HK has GST/VAT. Means the "duty free" at the airport is questionable. There however duty on alcohol and cigarettes.
3 :
call them i think there's also a duty free at tsim sha tsui

hi, follow this steps for Xp > make sure the router software is installed on computer . > start > control panel > system [classic view] > hardware expand network adaptor > check for installed wireless card > start > run > services.msc restart the " wireless 0 configuration > start > control panel > network connection [classic view] right click "Wireless networkc connections " > select your network from the list and click connect if your network is a secure network , you have to put a WEP like security key if your network is a unsecure network , you will be connected automatically finally , check the ipaddress of the computer start > run > cmd > click OK type ipconfig / all check ipaddress which should be like 192.168.x.x best of luck
2 :
That sounds like the NIC (Network interface card) may have went bad. Replace it and install the software. 20 bucks at best buy

i would like to know where is the cheapest place to buy laptop in hongkong

Go to the computer mall in Wanchai. To get there, take the MTR and take the Exit A4 -- it is literally right next to the MTR entrance. It's a good place for all electronics because everything is reasonably priced and you have a wide variety of shops to choose from.
2 :
Check a few other places ie Fortress and Broadway Stores. They're located in many open streets in Central, Wanchai, Causeway Bay, Tsimshatsui, Mongkok, etc. If you do not stay in HK for very long, better to buy it in a big store than small.
3 :
http://www.fortress.com.hk/fortress/jsp/sys/Sf_render.jsp?hf_s_id=FT11&hf_srv_id=Pv_fcu_home&hf_rand=1802463763&hf_locale_id=en cheaper price is everywhere but they may not be trustable. u better be careful when buying fr those small shops. so, the largest & most trustable wil be the above one = Fortress. it's w/ many store locations n is run by the richest man in HK
